Why Trotsky and Snowball are similar?
There are a few reasons why Trotsky and Snowball are similar, first, they are both brilliant speakers who could persuade people to follow and listen to them, they convinced a lot of people that their theories and thoughts are right . Second, they both intend to spread a theory in a certain region, area or country. Trotsky took part in the civil war in 1918-1919, he led the Red Army and defeated the White army. Snowball took part in the Battle of Cowshed, he led the animals and defeated the humans when they tried to take over the farm again. And, Trotsky wanted communism to spread to all the countries in the whole world, Snowball wanted Animalism (fictional theory which is based on communism) to be spread in every farm in England. Also, they both fought with somebody for power and control of the country or region but eventually failed and were expelled. Trotsky fougth with Stalin for power and control of USSR and was expelled, Snowball fought with Napoleon for the control of the Animal Farm, and was kicked out of the farm by Napoleon's guard dogs.
How did Orwell utilized the two of them? Is Snowball meant to be symbolizing Trotsky?
Orwell transformed the story of Russian Revolution into a fable, and he added some other elements to make the story more interesting and easier to understand, that's why the Animal Farm is not completely the same as the Russian Revolution. And yes, in Animal Farm, Snowball represents Leon Trotsky in real life history. Snowball's actions and thoughts are primarily based on Trotsky. For example, Trotsky wants communism to spread to every country in the world. Meanwhile Snowball wants animalism (a theory which is based on communism in animal farm) to be spread in every farm in England. Also Trotsky was expelled from his own country, so did Snowball. He was expelled from his farm by Napoleon. From all the above information, we can see that Orwell has done a great job on symbolizing Snowball as Trotsky in the story.
